Somerville Secondary's skills bloom with wetlands project

SOMERVILLE Secondary College's Wetlands Redevelopment Project is about to enter its construction phase.

For two years, Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning students have been working on the project to plan, design and restore a wetlands educational precinct within the school grounds. The aim is to help them develop and apply vocational skills.

Students have been involved in a range of tasks across all areas of the VCAL curriculum and local organisations and businesses such as the UNESCO Westernport Biosphere Reserve Project, Mornington Peninsula Shire, Communities That Care, Wetland and Wildlife Creations and Landcare and the Dolphin Research Institute.

The wetlands project has been funded through a $25,000 grant from the NAB Schools First Community Partnership program and matched by corporate sponsors Leighton Contractors.

Another local employer, Inghams Enterprises, has also committed to matching the dollar amount over the next two years with the goal of supporting young people in the Somerville community.
