Sydney shivers through chilly night

06 May, 2011 02:45 PM

Sydney shivered overnight as the mercury dropped to 10 degrees, the coolest minimum this early in May in three years.

A broad ridge of high pressure over south-east Australia brought cool temperatures overnight, meteorologist Micaela Weber at weatherzone.com.au said.

The ridge will remain slow-moving during the next few days, bringing mostly sunny skies and cool mornings until Monday when a low pressure trough develops.

Richmond in Sydney's west recorded a low of 4 degrees, the coldest morning there since last October.

Clear skies overnight and light winds allowed fog to form in Richmond, reducing visibility in parts to less than 200 metres before sunrise.

Temperatures dropped below zero degrees further inland and residents along the central tablelands were surprised when they woke up and saw frost covering cars.

Lithgow and Orange Airport had a shivery night with a low of -2 degrees, the coldest since last September.

Canberra recorded a frosty minimum of -4 degrees, its coldest overnight temperature for May since 2004 and the coldest May 6 since records began in 1939.

NSW is not the only state experiencing cooler temperatures.

Melbourne's temperature rose to only 14.8 degrees yesterday, its coldest day since last October.
