AN up-and-coming Fijian junior tennis player has been getting in plenty of practice at Somers Tennis Club before taking part in several junior tournaments around Melbourne as part of his preparation for the under-12 Pacific Oceania Junior Championships to be held in Fiji in July.
Conway Jabez 'CJ' Beg, who lives in Fiji's capital, Suva, currently holds the No.1 spot in the West Pacific under-12 team that will compete in the International Tennis Federation's Pacific Oceania Junior Championships to be held in Fiji next month.
The West Pacific team will compete against the East Pacific team (Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands and American Samoa) and the North Pacific Team (Federated States of Micronesia).
CJ was coached in Fiji by former Fijian open champion Finau Fa, who is currently in Australia with his partner, who also had a hand in CJ's coaching in Suva.
Fa has been putting CJ through his paces with running along the beach in Somers and exercise as well as visits to the aquatic centre in Hastings.
Kate Wilson, the 15-year-old granddaughter of Somers Tennis Club president Graeme Wilson, has been helping CJ's tennis with several sets of hard work at the club. How does CJ like it here?
"It's cold but I could easily live here, but mum and dad wouldn't like that. The tennis has been good and I've enjoyed seeing some of the sights in Melbourne like the aquarium."
Sport is in CJ's family: his father Conway was the coach of the Fiji national rugby union team after a career playing in England with London Welsh. His mother Angele is a former sprinter in Fiji.
CJ has been sponsored on this trip by a prominent Australian businessman who wishes to remain anonymous.
