POINT Leo has a budding star in its midst - Victoria's sole representative at the Wave Warriors Junior Challenge, Piper Harrison, defeated some of the nation's best young surf lifesavers at the North Wollongong beach last week.
Harrison, 11, turned in one of the best performances at the carnival, claiming two bronze medals and earning plenty of fans with her fighting spirit.
She was thrown off by a monster wave and hit by her craft in the under 11 board but carried on and finished a credible seventh in the event.
Wave Warriors, in its second year, is the brainchild of Ironman superstar Zane Holmes and the young competitors race around courses designed to mirror those used in the professional Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Ironman Series.
For Harrison, who was third in the girls under-11 ironwoman event and surf race, the week was a fantastic way to meet new people and enjoy the sport.
"Seeing all the competition and being able to make new friends was great," Harrison said. "The other great part was seeing all the different clubs and being able to race against them. I definitely want to get my friends to come as it will be even better if more people come."
