MORE than 5000 of Melbourne's social set turned out for the annual Portsea Polo Tournament at Point Nepean National Park on Saturday, which raised money for the Murdoch Children's Research Institute.
The smart set adorned the sidelines to watch the cream of Australian and New Zealand polo players slog it out, including Australian captain Glen Gilmore and Kiwi Greg Keyte.
The six-game tournament is among the premier polo events in Australia, attracting a star-studded line-up of sporting, arts and business notables.
The Land Rover team defeated the Stella Artois team in the main match.
The event raised $125,000 for the children's institute, which funds life saving child health research.
■Inspector Shayne Pannell of Rosebud police said 1600 motorists who attended the tournament were breath tested at stations on Point Nepean and Hotham roads with five charged with drink-driving offences. "This was a disappointing result given the warnings from police," he said.
