Special team in deed

19 May, 2010 04:00 AM
THE word team takes on a new meaning when applied to sailors Krista Bailey and Paul Borg.

The sporting cliche that a champion team is always better than a team of champions is often true, but none more so than two sailors with disabilities who have been chosen as our Sports Stars of the Week.

Without each other they would not be able to enjoy their competitive sailing which, they hope, will take them to the London Paralympics.

Bailey, who is confined to a wheelchair, supplies the eyes and vision while Borg, who has restricted vision, brings the muscle power and years of sailing acumen.

They were brought together earlier this year by Mt Eliza's Roxane Janet who, as their manager, has secured sponsorship from Mornington and Sandringham yacht clubs.

Together, they have been feverishly raising $10,000 so they can compete in the 2010 Access class world championships and SKUD18 international championships, hosted by the Rutland Sailing Club in England from June 4-10.

They hope to finish in the awards so that future international trips will receive some funding from government and sporting authorities.

If their plans proceed as envisaged, they will be chosen to compete in the 2012 London Paralympics after qualifying in Sydney next year.

Ms Janet said: "That is the plan at the moment. We are going overseas in a few days to get some experience as a team, which we hope will see us in good stead in our plans to compete in the Paralympics."

Bailey, of Seaford, has sailed in New Zealand on the SKUD18 and in sailability internationals, nationals and state titles.

She was Victoria's disabled sailor of the year in 2009. Borg sailed in the 1998 Sydney to Hobart and has won gold in sailability internationals.

He also competed in the Homerus international blind sailing match race championships in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2008, winning gold.
