Masters of championship

24 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
THE M Martha Lifesaving Club has won back-to-back state masters championships.

The team clinched the championship at Lorne under the guidance of coach Scott Fifield.

Masters competition is for athletes aged over 30, with age groups being five years apart. It is contested at state and national level every year with a world championships every second year - it will be in Egypt this year. Fifield said the secret to knocking off the big clubs such as Anglesea and Portsea seemed to have been a simple, general training program designed to include as many men and women as possible.

The Mt Martha team comprises almost entirely local talent. The club's Wednesday night training runs during daylight saving.

While there is a requirement to be a qualified patrolling member to compete in the Victorian championships, the Wednesday Masters training has encouraged and converted many casual members to gain their bronze medallion and help protect the community.

Next year, with the return of major sponsor Total Essential Services Group, Mt Martha Life Saving Club Masters hopes for a third win.
