THE Peninsula Dolphins have made it two practice match wins in a row with a three-point victory over the Melbourne-aligned Casey Scorpions.
As was their trademark under former coach Brett Lovett, the Dolphins fired out of the blocks early, kicking four goals to one to take a 20-point lead at the first break.
Inaccurate kicking at goal in perfect conditions at Casey Fields stopped Frankston from establishing a match-winning lead in the second quarter. The Scorpions edged back to within 14 points at half-time.
The Dolphins again kicked away early in the third quarter. Star forward Justin Berry and Langwarrin first-gamer Mark Baguley were particularly lively up forward, with big Brett Dore also providing a strong target.
The Dolphins had every Casey charge covered in the final term, but two very late goals from the home side reduced the margin to three points and gave new Dolphins coach Shannon Grant some heart flutters.
Midfielders Marcus Marigliani, James Magner and Clint Proctor all put up their usual fine displays. Young duo Peder Whelan and Trent Shinners showed good signs in the ruck.
The Dolphins play their final practice game this Saturday against the Northern Bullants (Carlton) at Princes Park, before facing Richmond-backed Coburg Tigers on Easter Sunday in round one.
