ALTHOUGH surf contests have been called off two weeks in a row through lack of waves, the midweek scene at the Mornington Peninsula's beaches has been entirely different.
Big-wave specialists Marti Paradisis and Mark Grayson watched the weather patterns and on Thursday chose their moment to hit the surf at Supertubes, a reef facing Bass Strait that creates some of the hollowest, most-powerful waves on the peninsula.
Grayson paddled onto some of the biggest waves of the day as well as driving a power ski to tow Tasmanian Paradisis onto the swells before they broke.
The twice-cancelled Peninsula Surfriders Club contest is now due to be held on Saturday. Visit www.psc.org.au for details.
Flinders surfer Georgia Fish on Saturday came second in her first heat at the Australian junior surfing titles at Coolum Beach in Queensland. The high placing advances the highly rated Fish to the second round in the titles, which end on Saturday.
The winner of the under-18 girls will go straight into Australian team to compete at the world under-18s in New Zealand in January. All finalists go into an elite training camp with some to be selected to represent Australia at the world junior championships in NZ.
