Gulls keep promotion hopes alive with victory

MORNINGTON kept its promotion hopes alive with a 3-2 win over Brandon Park on Saturday but must back up tonight against second-placed South Springvale in a catch-up game at Grange Reserve.

The Gulls are sitting fourth on 35 points and a win can bring them to within one point of a promotion spot with three rounds remaining.

Coach Adam Jamieson says if his side can get a result, even a draw, they are a good chance of securing a top two spot.

"The three above us all have to play each other in the last few rounds so a result on Wednesday night will well and truly put us in the mix," he said.

With the exception of Nick Waite, the Gulls have put most of their injury worries behind them including Cam Leopold who returned a fortnight ago. Midfielder Stevie Vernon has been playing up front in recent weeks, scoring two on the weekend, while 17-year-old Dillion Waugh has had an impact in his first two senior outings.

Peninsula Strikers drew 1-1 with Waverley Wanderers in state division 3 with coach Billy Armour scoring a second-half equaliser.

Langwarrin defeated Bulleen 4-2 on Monday night to remain an outside promotion chance in the tightly congested state league division 1.

Seaford United produced a stunning 7-0 victory over mid-table side Glen Waverley on Saturday to consolidate its bid for the premiership in the Provisional division 3 soccer competition.

Frankston Pines drew 2-2 with Eastern Lions with Matthew Morris-Thomas and Chris Aldunate each scoring.
