FRANKSTON Dolphins coach Simon Goosey believes the core of his side will be stronger this year as the club attempts to crawl from the lower rungs of the VFL ladder.
Goosey said the recruits - including Box Hill trio Leigh Kitchin, Dylan van Unen and Jackson Sketcher as well as a host of talented TAC Cup graduates - had added to the depth of the Dolphins' list.
But he believes his young team is set for a breakout season with a number of players entering their third, fourth or fifth seasons.
"With the improvement in the young group I would expect to win more games. We probably have the youngest list in the comp," he said. "We've put the games into the kids in the last couple of years and you look at a club like Port Melbourne and what that did for them."
The Dolphins, while they have lost top-liners Russell Gabriel (East Perth), Mark Baguley (Essendon) and Paul Kennedy (retired), have also added Casey Scorpions' Ben Waite, Old Carey's Luke Crozier and Noble Park pair Kyle Martin and Lachie Delahunty.
"Probably the most exciting thing is that we're all prepared to stay together for three or four years," Goosey said.
"It's important that you build something - gone are the days where you can recruit players and get instant success. You've got to build a strong foundation."
The Dolphins, who are training three nights a week, have their fitness camp at Mount Martha this weekend.
Frankston plays its first preseason match against Coburg at Craigieburn on February 25. The game begins at 11am.
