MPNFL: Frankston Bombers' mud, sweat and tears

30 Jun, 2010 12:00 AM
THE MPNFL Nepean Division season unofficially ended for the Frankston Bombers on Saturday when they drew with Red Hill in a thriller on the hill.

With just seven games to go before the end of the season, there would have to be a minor miracle for the Bombers to make up the 3?-game deficit that they have with fifth-placed Red Hill.

The Bombers went to 18 points, while the Hillmen jumped to 30. Tyabb is in sixth place on 28 points.

The Bombers looked set for victory at three-quarter time on Saturday when they led by 16 points and their season looked to be alive once again.

However, with its finals aspirations on the line, Red Hill also lifted.

The Hillmen booted 3.3 to five behinds in a frantic final term to force the draw.

Klay Hopgood was the only multiple goalkicker on the ground with two, while Michael Tardif was outstanding.

Haydn Moore and Shane Vandervalk flew the flag for the Bombers and reserves coach Travis Reints has been superb since going up to the seniors.

Somerville all but wrapped up second place on the Nepean Division table after booting eight goals to three in the second half to beat Rosebud by 30 points.

The Eagles led by just two points at half time. However, Leigh Stewart and Will Jolley began to dominate through the middle and Glen Boyd and Joel Atkins took control in attack and the game swung dramatically.

Atkins booted six to move to equal second on the goalkicking table.

The loss saw the Buds drop to fourth place.

Taking their place in third position on the ladder was Rye, which boasted a comfortable 56-point win over Hastings.

The Blues kicked the first four goals of the game, but ankle injuries to key forward and coach Glenn Michie and dominant ruckman Josh Mulheron saw the game turn.

The Demons booted the next 12 goals of the match and the game was over, the Demons eventually winning 22.18(150) to 14.10(94).

Tyabb had to work mighty hard for the four points against Pearcedale and, as a result, kept its finals hopes alive.

The Yabbies led by the smallest of margins at three-quarter time, but booted six goals to three in the last quarter to win 13.20(98) to 11.4(70).

Ash Waterstone was a surprise packet in attack booting three goals for the winners while Travis Wade booted two in a near best-on-ground performance.

Midfielders John Alexander and Craig Conlan were also outstanding performers.

Ricky Morris and Kerem Baskaya booted three each for the Dales while Jason Smith and Matt Vagg collected top votes.
