MPNFL: Frankston Bombers crash out

21 Jul, 2010 12:00 AM
THE MPNFL Nepean Division season officially ended for the Frankston Bombers on Saturday after they went down to Tyabb in a thriller at the pond.

Although it was highly un-likely the Bombers would make it, mathematically they were still a chance. On Saturday they led for the majority of the day but couldn't find a key target in the final 25 minutes and went down by 13 points.

Tyabb was superb when it mattered and while the Bombers are finished, the Yabbies are in sixth place, on the same points as fifth-placed Rosebud and just one game behind Rye, who occupy fourth.

The defence of Haydn Turner, Kade Anderson, Scott Pickers-

gill and Ash Souter was the difference between the Yabbies winning and losing, and John Alexander was also outstanding across half-back and through the middle.

Red Hill played a great brand of footy on Saturday against Somerville in ordinary conditions, smacking the Eagles for the second time this season.

The Hillmen completely dominated the Eagles for three quarters, leading by 48 points at half-time, 37 at three-quarter-time and winning by 32.

In only its second real pressure game for the season – the first one was in round two – Somerville cracked, argued with each another, tried to umpire the game and gave away undisciplined free kicks. The Eagles have four weeks to get that out of their game.

Rye got over the line against Rosebud by two points in a thriller on Saturday. For the second time this season between these two teams, Rosebud kicked inaccurately and booted itself out of the win despite having 32 (14.18) scoring shots to 24 (16.8).

Rosebud and Tyabb go head to head this weekend to determine outright fifth place. Luke Herrington booted five goals and Dean Warry four in Crib Point's 36-point win against Dromana. With James Cook starring in the ruck, the Magpies were always ahead of the Tigers and kicked away in the last.

Sorrento comfortably accounted for Pearcedale by 55 points.
