Finals race thrown wide open

28 Jul, 2010 12:00 AM
THE MPNFL Peninsula Division season has been thrown wide open once again after some classic matches and results on Saturday.

While Frankston YCW and Seaford stamped themselves as premiership favourites with wins against Mt Eliza and Karingal respectively, there is now a logjam of teams all vying for the final place in the top five.

Bonbeach knocked over Chelsea on Saturday and Pines rolled Langwarrin, which leaves all four of these sides on 24 points with four games remaining.

The Gulls have the best percentage of 97 and have what appears as the easiest run home, playing two top five sides (Mt Eliza, Langwarrin, YCW, Pines).

Langwarrin plays YCW, Chelsea, Edi-Asp and Seaford in the last month and Bonbeach faces Edi-Asp, Seaford, Karingal and Mt Eliza. The Pythons tackle Karingal, YCW, Mornington and Chelsea on their way home.

At the other end of the scale, Frankston YCW made mincemeat of Mt Eliza on Saturday, restricting the Mounties to just four goals while booting 13 themselves.

Seaford opened up a four-goal break against Karingal in the opening term, extended that to six goals by half-time and the final margin was 51 points.

Langwarrin stole defeat from the jaws of victory on Saturday when it went down with the final kick of the day against Pines.

With his side down by five points with seconds left on the clock, former Langwarrin spearhead Ricky Ramsdale took a mark on the siren.

Forty metres out and against the boundary line, Ramsdale went back and nailed the goal, giving the Pythons a one-point victory.

Bonbeach kept its finals hopes well and truly alive, beating Chelsea by 12 points. The Gulls were celebrating their 1990 and 2000 premiership reunions, but there wasn't a lot of celebrating to be done after the final siren.

Scott McDonald was superb with five goals, as was Matt Clifford, who also booted five.

The Sharks set up the win with a five goal to two third term.

Brent Bowden kicked 10 goals in a best-on-ground display for Edithvale-Aspendale against Mornington.

With Tim Mannix and Jeremy Heys also outstanding, the Eagles led all afternoon to win by 49 points.
