THE Frankston Dolphins were handed a lesson in conversion by the Bendigo Bombers on Sunday, crashing to a 16-goal defeat after trailing by just three entering time-on in the second quarter.
Ironically, after the home team had put the foot down to lead by 41 points at half-time, the Dolphins had the better of field play in the third quarter but squandered easy chances. The Bombers then put on a high-marking display in their forward line in the final term to pile on six goals to none.
Around the ground, the Dolphins dominated the clearances, 42-26, thanks to the tireless Russell Gabriel in the ruck, and the strong work of Frankston YCW's Mitch Bosward, Shane Hockey from Mornington and Somerville's Ben Crowe at ground level.
The Dolphins also pumped the ball inside the forward 50 45 times, but received a return of just 5.10 for the day. In contrast, the Bombers made the difficult look easy as they made a mockery of the muddy conditions, scoring 21.10.
The reserves were defeated by the Northern Bullants by 53, with Mt Eliza's James Anwyl booting three goals and Langwarrin's Scott Sienkiewicz best afield.
