21 players facing footy suspension

21 Oct, 2009 12:33 PM
MORNINGTON Peninsula Nepean Football League has suspended the playing permits of 21 Pearcedale Football Club players after an alleged drunken rampage through Warrnambool during an end-of-season trip.

Each player must write to the league explaining why he should not be deregistered from the competition.

The board of the MPNFL will consider their appeal letters.

MPNFL operations manager ian Benson said the players were considered to have brought the MPNFL, the Victorian Football League and the sport into disrepute.

A group of Pearcedale players were allegedly involved in incidents at Warrnambool on the weekend of October 10 and 11, including racially and sexually abusing police, brawling and trashing two motel rooms.

A 23-year-old Seaford man has been charged with drug offences and a 24-year-old Pearcedale man faces counts of drunkenness and providing false details to police.

Pearcedale Football Club president Steve Green was reported as saying the damage to the motel was probably caused by people from outside the club.

Mr Green told the Warrnambool Standard the club did not organise the trip.

"Some blokes were down there with some mates but it [the trip] wasn't club sanctioned, it wasn't endorsed and wasn't organised."

Last month, Brian Nankervis of the Goods Sports program, of which Pearcedale Football Club is a part, told The Mail the onus was on club officials to ensure player welfare on end-of-year trips.

"They should meet the people organising the event, discuss what is planned, and identify risks and measures to reduce those risks," Nankervis said.

"We do not want to see headlines that say 'Footballers Mad Monday celebrations end in tragedy and arrests'."
