Upset puts Somerville on bottom

03 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
SOMERVILLE is back in murky waters after Sorrento caused one of the upsets of the season by beating Long Island in MPCA Provincial cricket.

Frankston YCW also picked up a win against Heatherhill, sending Somerville to the bottom of the table with just one round to play.

The Eagles are on 24 points, 12 shy of YCW and Sorrento after those teams won on Saturday.

YCW did the job with the ball the previous week, sending Heatherhill packing for 152.

The Stonecats resumed on 2-32 and Matty Lane with 38 and Craig Burch (45) got the Stonecats over the line with a score of 180. Matty Meagher was the best of the Hills' bowlers with 4-67.

Sorrento successfully defended its 8-208, bowling out Long island for 182.

Nick Davern was the pick of the Sorras bowlers with 3-45 and Ryan O'Connor snared 2-43.

Scott Phillips top-scored for the Islanders with 36 and Stuart McLeod scored 35.

Ballam Park moved into the top four, removing Mt Martha after beating it on Saturday. The Knights rolled Mt Martha for 99 last Saturday week and responded with 8-165.

Somerville got close to chasing down Crib Point's 162, falling short by six runs.

Ben Delaney resumed on 59 with his side in all sorts of trouble at 6-88. He went on to be unbeaten on 104, his side making 156.

Brad Davidson was superb for the Magpies with an incredible 5-9, and Glen Barclay collected three wickets.

Moorooduc made life very difficult for Peninsula Old Boys after hunting down the 251 needed for victory.

The Ducs finished on 7-258, Rob Wilson top-scoring with 75 and Neil Barfuss getting 42. It was a good back-up for the Ducs following their Twenty20 title win the week before.

Mornington had everything on the line on Saturday but failed to get the win, going down to Baxter.

The Dogs bowled out Baxter for 201, but were dismissed themselves for 181.

Adrian Mack was back to his best with 4-31 and Marc Uccello took 4-64. Anthony Gapes was the best of the Mornington bats with 65.

Ouch: Top, a Mt Martha fieldsman feels the pain of it all as Ballam Park cruises past his teams meagre total in the MPCA Provincial Shield match on Saturday. Left, a Mt Martha bowler almost lost his trousers as he puts some extra effort in. Right, Ballam Park's Hamza Siddique keeps his eye on the ball. Pictures: Yanni
