Tooters consolidate fourth

20 Jan, 2010 12:44 PM
TOOTGAROOK sits comfortably in fourth place on the MPCA Sub-District ladder after beating Dromana by eight runs on Saturday.

The Tooters have suffered a finals drought in recent seasons but are now in a strong position to reverse the trend this season.

Mark Bradshaw scored 70, Jason Lane 48 and Darren Long 31 to help their side to 204, chasing 7-196.

While the Tooters are well and truly in the finals hunt, Dromana has fallen right away and will be lucky not to finish bottom.

After Saturday's round, Skye is two games clear on top of the table after smashing Flinders by 130 runs.

Skye, or to be more precise, Chris Smith, was superb with the bat in week one and left the glamour side of the competition with plenty of work to do.

However, Skye's bowlers were superb, Jamie Smith outstanding with his best figures of the season – 7-50.

The Skye skipper has now taken 28 wickets for the season, four better than Flinders' Matthew Burns, who has 24. Leigh Smith claimed 2-26, and Mark Maddock top-scored for Flinders with 36.

Tyabb is one game outside the top four after beating Seaford Tigers by one wicket.

Chasing 161 for victory, the Yabbies worked hard to get the 12 points, finishing on 9-166. Luke Rus top-scored with 37 and Scotty Pickersgill finished unbeaten on 30 to get the Yabbies over the line.

The Tigers remain on three wins and a game outside the four.

Baden Powell had an opportunity to go to outright second on the table on Saturday but was well beaten by Rosebud.

The Braves set Rosebud 239 for victory, and the home side scored 9-287, Peter Doughty getting 106 and Shannon Jeffreys 51. Andrew Norris was the pick of the Braves' bowlers with 4-89.

Pearcedale is also in the hunt for a place in the finals after smashing Carrum Downs by more than 100 runs.

The Cougars were looking for 271 for victory but were bundled out for 162.

After starting the season in D grade, Michael O'Driscoll was the best of the Cougars' batsmen with 73 but he played a lone hand. Martin Burns finishing unbeaten on 25.

Under-15 player Sam Frawley was superb for the Dales, bowling 10 overs (two maidens) and finishing with 4-17.

He had taken eight wickets in his previous three matches in the seconds, and now has eight wickets in four matches for the firsts.

Jarryd Herbert also claimed three wickets for the Dales and Kaine Smith remained in the top five wicket takers in the competition with 2-22.
