Premier Cricket: Semi-finals elude victorious Heat

11 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
FRANKSTON Peninsula Heat has missed the Premier Cricket one-day semi-finals despite recording a strong victory over North Melbourne at Junction Oval on Saturday.

The Heat batted superbly to set up the victory in overcast conditions to post 5-252 from its 50 overs before Scott Boland celebrated his 50th match with a three-wicket haul.

Skipper Matt Chasemore said he was happy with the performance but disappointed the Heat missed the semi-finals.

He said the Heat would attempt to keep a settled line-up in the second half of the season after many changes to its batting line-up.

"We have been tinkering with the batting order all year and we decided that enough was enough," he said. "We went there expecting to win considering the ladder positions and we were pretty happy."

While the top score again came from Chasemore (55), every Heat batsman got a start to highlight its depth.

Ben Hillard (54 not out) anchored the Heat's innings while Nick Jewell (52) made a valuable quick-fire contribution towards the end of the innings.

Jewell's runs came off just 29 deliveries after he missed a large chunk of cricket through injury, and Chasemore has forecast a strong second half of the season for the former Victorian player.

"Having Nick Jewell coming in at six is priceless," he said. He also paid tribute to Boland, who has taken his game to another level this season.

"He's probably the quickest getting around in the competition and within the next 12 months he is going to get even better," he said. ''He has been playing well since he came back from state duties. He has been taking the new ball as well - normally Miller and Grovesy take it but when someone asks to do something I like to give them that opportunity."

While Eric Ghasperidis (44) helped the Kangaroos to 3-89, a middle-order collapse had them all out for 174 in the 45th over.

Boland (3-36), James Miller (3-37) and Jack Benbow (3-26) then bowled the Heat to victory despite some resistance from skipper Carl Sandri (18) and James Damjanovski (42).

Despite the win, the Heat finished fifth on the one-day ladder on 18 points, the same number as Geelong, which has a superior net run rate.

In the seconds, the Heat defeated North Melbourne by 72 runs in their clash at AH Butler Oval on Saturday.

The Heat posted 9-186 with Chris Dew (66) and Chris Hall (35 not out) top-scoring on a pitch offering some assistance. The Roos were then bowled out for 114 with Chris McCormick and Hall both snaring three wickets.

North Melbourne made 147 in its third grade clash with the Heat, passing the total nine wickets down in a thrilling finale.

Frankston Peninsula's next game is a two-day fixture against Northcote at AH Butler Oval, starting on Saturday.
