PENINSULA Old Boys sent a loud and clear message to Sorrento on Saturday that the Sorras have a way to go to compete with the best in MPCA provincial cricket.
Despite sitting in the top four leading into the first game of 2012, the Sorras barely held a candle to the reigning champions of the MPCA.
Batting first, the Sorras were rolled for just 79 in the 34th over. Only three players managed to get into double figures, David Smith being left stranded not out on 15.
Neil Franks was superb for the Old Boys with 5-19 from 10 overs. The Old Boys didn't set the world on fire early in their chase, struggling at 3-20, before Wade Pelzer and Glen Prendergast steadied the ship with an unbeaten 29 and 35 respectively.
The Old Boys' biggest rival, Baxter, kicked off its quest to win the title in ideal fashion, belting Moorooduc. Baxter lost the toss and was sent in to bat, scoring 7-198 with Shane McComb top scoring with 63 and Darren Uccello helping himself to 52.
Moorooduc was bowled out for 93 in 33 overs. Adrian Mack was masterful with the ball, snaring 2-5 from eight overs, while Mark Uccello took 3-44. Travis Sawers and Ben Smith also collected a couple of wickets each.
Hot-and-cold Hastings made light work of Mornington, smashing them by 145 runs.
The Blues batted first and amassed 3-205, Trevor Johnston clubbing 91 and Darren Kerr opening with 47.
The Doggies were then rolled for 80 in the 26th over. Teenager Dylan Ryan was the pick of the Hastings bowlers with 3-10.
Long Island set Crib Point a modest total of 132 for victory in its match but it proved to be enough to collect the win. Jason Bedford top scored for the Islanders with 34, while Chris Hocking and Justin Bridgeman were the pick of the bowlers with three wickets each. The Magpies were rolled for 101.
Heatherhill provided the surprise of the round, knocking over Mt Martha. The Hills were able to chase down the 9-133 set by the Reds, scoring 7-141, with Matt Meagher top scoring with 41. Meagher also did the damage with the ball for the Hills with 3-18.
Rye did what it had to do to get the all-important 12 points against Ballam Park. The Knights were rolled for 100 before the home side chased down the total six wickets down.
