MPCA: Eagles triumph in bowl-off thriller

25 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
SOMERVILLE advanced to the Jack Peacock Twenty20 Shield final with a thrilling 'bowl-off' victory over Mt Martha at Somerville Reserve on Sunday.

Under the Kookaburra Cup rules, under which the MPCA's Twenty20 competition is governed, if the competing teams tie, the match is decided by five bowlers from each club having two bowls at the stumps.

After the initial bowl-off, Somerville and Mt Martha had both hit the wickets an equal number of times, which meant the clubs had to put forward three players to continue the decider.

The Eagles triumphed in the chaotic circumstances, with players initially unsure of the rules.

"The umpires were aware of what was to happen," MPCA general manager Paul Pelzer said. "We also had the rule book there."

Somerville will clash with Mt Eliza in the final on Sunday, February 5 at Alexandra Park, Mornington.

The Mounties marched into the final with an impressive eight-wicket victory over Peninsula Old Boys, also played at Somerville.

The Old Boys batted first and were soon in trouble with Justin Savio snaring 4-16 from his four overs. The Old Boys eventually stumbled to be all out for 89 in the 17th over. In reply, the Mounties charged to 2-92 in the 14th over with Jason Mathers top-scoring with 28 not out.

■ Baxter star Daniel Warwick will lead the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association against Frankston Peninsula Heat in their annual Twenty20 match at AH Butler Oval on Sunday.

Last week, the MPCA announced a star-studded squad with champion Sorrento all-rounder Anthony Blackwell, Moorooduc's Bob Wilson and Long Island guns Justin Bridgeman, Paul Hartle and Michael Burke.

Team manager and MPCA general manager Paul Pelzer said Pelzer said Warwick and Blackwell loomed as keys if the MPCA was to topple the Heat.

There will be an under-18 game beginning at 10am before the senior clash at 2.15.

Senior squad: Daniel Warwick (captain, Baxter), Anthony Blackwell (Sorrento), Bob Wilson (Moorooduc), Michael Burke (Long Island), Rob Hearn (Mornington), Andy Johnson (Langwarrin), Dale Irving (Baxter), Justin Bridgeman (Long Island), Paul Hartle (Long Island), John Forrest (POB), Matt Meagher (Heatherhill), Adam Jones (POB).

Under-18: Leigh Janssen (captain, Boneo), Kristian Miller (Heatherhill), Jack Fowler (Boneo), Mitch Darville (Mt Martha), Jayden Pain (Red Hill), Lachlan Hay (Main Ridge), Jack Heseltine (Mornington), Jordan Pomeroy (Mt Martha), Patrick Beckham (Skye), Lachlan Dobson (Carrum), Brad Trotter (Pearcedale), Blake Hogan-Keogh (Crib Point), Jedd Flack (Sorrento).
