MPCA: Battle heats up for spots

01 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
THERE is a massive logjam from third to seventh on the MPCA District Shield ladder after the fourth to seventh-placed sides lost their matches on Saturday.

While the top two (Mt Eliza and Langwarrin) are now safe after winning their games, Boneo, Main Ridge, Seaford and Somerville failed in their bid to shore up a top-four placing.

Carrum was the big winner, now holding third place and a one-game buffer between itself and the pack after smashing Boneo on Saturday.

In the battle for third place, Carrum set Boneo 205 for victory. However, Dean Polson, who made an unbeaten 131 with the bat, snared 3-10 to help his side bowl out Boneo for just 75. Polson then took 2-10 when the Lions sent the visitors back in to bat. Boneo finished on 2-44.

Balnarring saved itself from relegation with a 44-run win against Delacombe Park. With a massive chance to push for the four, the Parkers let themselves down, rolled for 179, chasing 224 for victory. Joel Malcolm was the best of the home side with 41.

Langwarrin leggies Ben Wells and 17-year-old Matt Prosser snared eight wickets between them to easily account for Seaford on Saturday. Defending a modest 180, Langwarrin bowled out the home side for just 117, Wells snaring 5-18 and Prosser 3-8.

Main Ridge, too, had a wonderful opportunity to get the points against Baden Powell, but fell 17 runs short. Chasing 241 for victory, Main Ridge was rolled for 223, John Harrison outstanding for the Braves with 5-65.

Justin Grant led Mt Eliza to a three-wicket win against Somerville. Set 193 for victory, Mt Eliza finished at 7-241, Grant unbeaten at the crease on 74.

Flinders went within four wickets of picking up the outright victory against Frankston YCW. Defending a monster total of 329, despite being at Samuel Sherlock, the Stonecats were bowled out for 111 and 6-119.
