MORNINGTON continued its sensational start to the season on Saturday in MPCA Provincial cricket, scoring
7-233 against Somerville.
Once again it was Jason Mathers and Luke Popov who did most of the damage with the bat, scoring 70 and 65 not out respectively.
Matt Foon again showed why he is one of the best youngsters in the comp with 40.
The Doggies won the toss and elected to bat, the top order in control.
Somerville's Mal Coutts was the bowler to get the breakthrough, removing Mathers and Foon to finish with 3-29, and Ben Delaney did some damage late in the innings, snaring 3-80 off 21 overs.
Long Island has set Frankston YCW 219 for victory after scratching to a reasonable total on Saturday.
At one stage, the Islanders were 3-19, before Scotty Phillips and Gary Measham regained control.
Phillips finished with 61 and Stuart Doolan was unbeaten on 48 at the end of the 75 overs for the Islanders.
Craig Burch bowled a mammoth 34 overs for the Stonecats and was impressive with 4-78, his spell including 14 maidens.
The match between Heatherhill and Moorooduc is in the balance after 14 wickets fell on the first day.
Played at Moorooduc Reserve, the home side won the toss and elected to bat. At one stage early, the Ducs were reeling at 5-25, Matty Meagher and Mark Fisher causing havoc.
Meagher finished the afternoon with 4-35 from 14 overs and Fisher claimed 3-36 from 14.
Thankfully for the Ducs, Joey Lane and Greg McCann scored 49 and 27 respectively. Moorooduc was bowled out in the 54th over for 143.
To win the game, the Ducs' bowlers needed to produce something special with the pill.
Kyle Blake took the new ball along with Michael Heib and the pair did exactly what their captain Joel Malcolm asked for.
Blake took 2-20 off six overs and Heib claimed the wicket of John Hille jnr. Rob Wilson also picked up a wicket in the last over for the day to help his side regain some control. The Hills finished the day on 4-64.
Mt Martha is in trouble against Crib Point, the Magpies continuing their solid start to the season.
The Reds won the toss and batted first, scrambling to just 119 in 65 overs.
Glen Barclay (3-23) did the early damage for the Magpies with three quick wickets, including the dangerous Chris Holcombe for just three, before Brad Watson (4-29) cleaned-up the middle order. Luke Herrington (2-22) chipped in at the end with two wickets.
Nick Johnson was the best of the Mt Martha bats with 34.
In reply for Crib Point, Matt Blake and Henry Dolphin are unbeaten at the crease on 0-22.
Sorrento's bowlers have a lot to do with the ball to defend the 149 it made against Ballam Park. The Sorras were cruising at 1-70, before losing the next four wickets for just nine runs. Nick Gurry was the destroyer with the ball for the Knights with 4-44 from 26 overs.
