Eagles to go down a perch

Eagles to go down a perch

10 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
SOMERVILLE failed to avoid MPCA Provincial relegation, despite being the only team in the whole of the competition to get a result on Saturday.

Although it beat Heatherhill on a rain-affected day, Somerville will play in District cricket next season.

The Eagles finished on 36 points, the same as Heatherhill, but had an inferior percentage owing to the fact they had a lot more runs scored against them this season.

There wasn't another result in Provincial on Saturday.

Somerville coach Mal Coutts was superb for the Eagles, snaring 4-16. Andrew Kaddatz picked up 3-8 and Russell Wilkes 3-16.

The Hills were bowled out for 52. Craig Black was undefeated on 40 and Ben Delaney 25 not out when Somerville reached the total.

At the other end of the equation, Baxter finished on top of the Provincial table and will play Ballam Park in the first final this weekend.

In the other final, Crib Point will host Long Island.

Long island scored 3-155 before rain stopped play in the 33rd over against Baxter.

Justin Bridgeman scored 46 and Michael Phillips was unbeaten on 43 when the game was stopped.

Dale Irving was the best of the bowlers with two wickets for Baxter.

Ballam Park still had another two overs to bat when its match against YCW was called off.

Brad Denny scored 49 and Hamza Siddique 60 in opening the innings for the Knights while Matty Duff, batting at No.3, carved up the bowlers with 75.

In other MPCA Provincial matches, Mornington scored 7-128 against Crib Point, Peninsula Old Boys hit 6-140 against Mt Martha and Sorrento was 4-84 when play was abandoned against Moorooduc.

It wasn't the ideal way for the home and away season to come to a close.

The four best sides, however, will fight it out for the premiership over the next few weeks.
