Last-minute heartache in Mornington

30 Jun, 2010 01:00 AM
MORNINGTON basketball stadium was full of action on the weekend when it hosted a series of thrilling games.

In division 2 women's action, the Lady Retravision Breakers hosted fourth-placed Blackburn Vikings in a tight contest that produced 15 lead changes and nine tied situations.

With two points or less separating the teams at the end of each quarter and both teams needing a win to keep their finals aspirations alive, it was always going to be a dramatic finish.

It was in the final nine seconds of the match that a crucial mistake brought the Breakers undone. With a one-point lead in hand, Blackburn stole the ball - and the game - with a quick basket. The Breakers had just four seconds left to mount one last attempt to secure a three-pointer, but a shot on the buzzer fell short.

Rachael Wansbrough displayed brute force to snag 15 points and 15 boards.

The final scoreline was Breakers 65 to Blackburn 66.

In division 2 men's action, it was the Breaker's better execution of their shots, hitting 41 per cent from the field compared to Coburg's 35 per cent, that proved the difference.

Import Marcus Robinson was instrumental in leading the Breakers' attack, hitting a game-high 38 points at 43 per cent from the field and a crucial 85per cent for 17-20 from the charity line.

The last quarter was all the Breakers as they put on 34 points to run out winners 102 to 76.

On Sunday, the division 2 youth league team hosted the Coburg Giants and, despite both sides facing a bleak end to their 2010 campaign, the physicality of the match intensified as the Giants hit several crucial shots to level the scores late in the game.

In a repeat of the women's game on Saturday night, including the scoreline, the young Breakers were up by a single point with four seconds remaining, when they turned the ball over to the Giants, who ran away with an uncontested lay-up to silence the home crowd and win by a single point,

66-65.
