THE Mornington Retravision Lady Breakers division 2 basketball team had the warning bells ringing early against second-placed McKinnon Cougars on Saturday night even though it led 15-7 at the first break.
The Cougars rallied in the second quarter and overcame their slow start, going up by two points at half-time. Proving why many see them as the team to beat with a crushing 26-8 third period, the Cougars scored their 15th win of the season, 69-52.
The Breakers' Rachael Wansborough continued an outstanding season with 17 points and 16 rebounds and Kristy-Lee Percival led the way for the Cougars with 19 points.
In division 2 men, Mornington defeated Craigieburn 85-83 after a see-sawing three quarters saw the Breakers hold a 10-point buffer going into the final term.
Craigieburn's star import Allen White was held to only a few shots while the Breakers Vlad Tankov's great three-point shooting continued into the fourth, assisted by excellent games by Dave Smith and Cade Egan.
After a series of untimely turnovers and great shooting by Allen White, Craigieburn drew level only to watch the Breakers streak away on a fast break with 2.8 seconds left, and win by two points in a heart-stopping finish, cementing the Breakers into final contention and consolidating their top spot on the ladder with one game left in the regular season.
In youth league men, McKinnon defeated Mornington 85-47, the Breakers finding the going tough all night.
Despite a season which has only seen one win, the young Breakers are usually more competitive than their effort on Saturday night.
But determined to hit their peak at the right end of the season, the Cougars were never going to let Mornington into the game.
Michael Batley with 18 and Ben Rissman (14) were the leading scorers for the Cougars, Sam Ayre was also solid with 11 points and 16 boards. For the Breakers, Brenton Jewell led the way with 14 points.
This week's home game is Saturday night: Division 2 women v Camberwell, tip-off 7pm.
The youth league and men play away at Coburg 6pm and 8pm respectively.
