WITH Marcus Robinson a no-show and the prospect of travelling to Traralgon to play LaTrobe City, it seemed the Mornington Breakers were up against it in the first of the semi-final play-offs.
But never underestimate the hunger of Ron Ryer's Breakers as they played an inspired final quarter to snatch a crucial 76-73 win.
With a highly entertaining first quarter and both squads shooting the lights out (which is especially tough to do in Latrobe) the game was tied up at 25 each.
Again, after the second quarter, the teams were unable to be split, both sitting on 49 points, both converting well.
After coming out from the long break, Latrobe City wasn't slowing down, drilling out a 22-16 third term and Mornington was looking
dead and buried, but rallied as Latrobe City's shots faltered and the Breakers willed themselves to a game-one victory.
David Smith (25 points and 11 boards) and Cade Egan (24 points) were the heroes for Mornington while Jordan Canovan continued what he's been doing all season, posting 27 points, 20 boards, six assists and six steals in a one-man show.
The Breakers need to win on Saturday night in game two of the semi-final to advance to the finals; a loss will see them play game three on Sunday.
