MORNINGTON stayed on top of the Big V basketball league's division 2 men's ladder with an 88-80 defeat of Craigieburn at the weekend.
Eight points looks a comfortable margin, but nothing could have been further from the truth for the Breakers.
The first quarter started evenly with both teams scoring basket for basket before the Breakers took the lead 23-15 at the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, good defence from Mornington caused the Eagles to make mistakes and allowed the Breakers to extend the lead to 20 points at half-time.
The Eagles pushed back at the start of the third quarter, reducing the lead to 15points before the Breakers realised they had a game on their hands.
Mornington extended the break to 20 points only to have the Eagles pick up the pace, push up the court and hit the baskets hard.
In the last three minutes of the third quarter, the Eagles could do no wrong closing the gap to eight points, bringing the score to 58-66.
In the final term, Craigieburn's defence allowed it to steal the ball and get to within three points at the eight-minute mark.
The Breakers called a time out, after which it was basket for basket, with the Eagles one point adrift with four minutes to go.
Then Mornington showed why it's on top of the ladder, finishing the game with an eight-point margin.
