Bottom side breaks Mornington apart

21 Jul, 2010 12:00 AM
ORDINARY games give ordinary results and that's what happened at Mornington's Breaker dome on Saturday night, with the Mornington Retravision Breakers putting in a below-par performance against last-placed Darebin in the Division 2 women's baskeball match, losing 72-69.

The lady Breakers skipped out to a quick lead on the back of Teegan Rolfe (25 points with seven treys), then faulted in the second quarter only able to post six points in a poor shooting display.

A half-time spray by their coach lifted the Breakers in the third who were down at one stage by 13 points, then they clicked, bringing the game back to a single point but not enough to match Darebin's determination and in the end it was Jessie Schleibs who sealed the Breakers' fate with 34 points.

No stranger to big double-doubles, Mornington's Rachael Wansbrough put in another big performance after hitting 25 points and hauling down 23 rebounds.

■ Division 2 Men: Mornington's Vlad Tankov helped dismantle Keilor with 34 points, 12 rebounds, five treys, two blocks, two assists and three steals to help his team win 81-67.

The first quarter saw a slow scoring start, with defence being the main focus. Keilor took control of the second quarter with some good shooting with Mornington's scoring drying up as it tried to work out a rhythm without their prime scorer Marcus Robinson.

Mornington turned the third quarter around after finding scoring avenues through great team play and shooting from Vlad Tankov and David Smith's 21 points.

The Breakers continued into the fourth and pulled a great and deserved win, ensuring their top position and finals birth.

■ Youth League Men: Sunbury 78 dMornington 64 and it's been a frustrating maiden season for the Breakers, who have played some good basketball which doesn't translate to wins on the board, sentiments echoed by coach Alan Evans.

"When we can put four quarters together then we will win, until then this is as good as it will get," he said, which pretty much sums up his team's season.

Anthony Pegg's 15 points and Sean Hogenbirk's double double with 13 points and 16 rebounds were a highlight for Mornington.
