THE Mornington Peninsula has nine finalists in the national 2010 Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Towns awards.

The Western Port Festival, under the direction of the Western Port Chamber of Commerce, has made the cut for best community event involving more than 3000 people.

Western Port Secondary College in Hastings is up for an award in the energy efficient category.

Tyabb Primary School is one of six finalists in the young leaders section and Balnarring Primary School, with its wetland and sustainability centre, is vying for the title of most active school.

Other peninsula finalists are Mornington Community Garden (community action) and Mornington Peninsula Shire (environmental innovation).

Rosebud West Community Renewal group is in three categories - protection of the environment, energy efficiency and the overall 2010 Victorian Tidy Town of the Year award.

The awards ceremony will be held next month at Beechworth in northern Victoria.
