Volunteers 'blitz' old cottage

10 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
SAGES Cottage was once again a working farm when a group of volunteers descended on the historic property for a farmyard blitz. The volunteers from the Heritagecare program managed by Conservation Volunteers Australia spruced up the gardens and completed maintenance work on the cottage and outbuildings.

The cottage, built in 1853 and occupied by the Sage family for more than a century, is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.

Some of the trees and hedges planted in the mid-1800s also survive and many farm activities continue, thanks in large part to the Menzies organisation, which uses the farm as a haven for disadvantaged children. Sages Cottage Cafe, with seating in the cottage and on its cool verandas, is open 10am-3pm each Friday and Saturday.
