POLICE believe there may be a link between the burglary of a Rosebud supermarket, an attempted burglary at a Somerville supermarket and the theft of heavy-duty machinery from a hire depot in Hastings.
A man used a demolition saw to hack through a metal roller door at the rear of the Coles supermarket in Somerville about 3.30am on Tuesday, February 16.
Five Stihl demolition chainsaws were stolen from Coates Hire in Hastings overnight on February 3-4.
Detective Leading Senior Constable Nick Sweetman of Hastings police said security cameras filmed the man attacking the door in short bursts over 25 minutes in an effort to minimise noise and go undetected.
He was wearing a navy 'hoodie', a dark jacket and jeans and his face was covered with a white scarf or similar covering. He came equipped with a backpack full of heavy-duty equipment such as bolt cutters.
Detective Leading Senior Constable Sweetman said the man attempted to gain access to a money safe at the front of the store but failed and left empty-handed.
Police are investigating a possible connection with a burglary of Coles in Rosebud on Saturday, February 13. Detective Senior Constable Deb Seymour of Rosebud police said two men forced their way into the supermarket about 3am and broke into a money safe.
She would not reveal how much cash had been stolen, but said it was a "substantial amount".
The men are described as aged between 25 and 30 and about 183 centimetres. They were wearing 'hoodies' and peaked caps.
Anyone with information on either incident can call Rosebud police on 59860444 or Hastings police on 59707800.
