Splash and dash

01 Sep, 2010 12:00 AM
Department of Sustainability and Environment contractors continue to play King Canute at Portsea Beach, dumping large rocks, huge sandbags and more than 50,000 tonnes of Gippsland sand in an attempt to save the iconic foreshore, which has lost 15 metres of width in less than 18 months, coinciding with the end of dredging at Port Phillip Bay's entrance. The government is spending more than $1million on the beach and hopes the work will be finished before summer. This elderly man showed a bit of dash last Wednesday when a high tide and massive swell sent huge, ocean beach-type waves crashing onto the coast.
