MORNINGTON Shire is not one of the 11 councils to join the State Government's amnesty on fees charged on top of unpaid fines.
From last Tuesday, fine evaders can either pay the original fine amount or arrange payment with Civic Compliance Victoria.
The waiver, which ends on March 19, comes ahead of a planned enforcement crackdown on fine defaulters. Attorney-General Rob Hulls said: "This fee waiver gives people the opportunity and incentive to act on their fines instead of simply hoping they will go away. Usually, people do the right thing and pay their fines. However, some people and companies consistently ignore their responsibilities."
Mr Hulls said it was the second time a fee waiver was introduced. About $50million was collected in 2006. The waiver applied to all State Government-issued fines, including the Department of Transport, Victoria Police and Department of Primary Industries. "This means almost 94 per cent of all outstanding infringements are covered by the fee waiver," Mr Hulls said.
The Sheriff's Office will launch an increased enforcement blitz across the state at the completion of the waiver period.
