MT Martha midwife and breast care nurse Jo Lovelock is Mornington Peninsula Shire's 2012 citizen of the year.
Mornington Secondary College year 12 student Fiona Sanford was named young citizen of the year and the 2011 Australia Day fun run (Rosebud) as the community event of the year at the shire's Australia Day celebrations at Rosebud.
Mrs Lovelock's award recognises her tireless contribution - on the peninsula and overseas - to breast cancer care and awareness.
"I was surprised because I didn't know my lovely boss Marg Joyce, who is the manager of the midwifery unit at The Bays Hospital, had nominated me," she said.
Mrs Lovelock, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 at the age of 44, has fully recovered from the disease.
In 2004, she helped establish the Breast Intentions support group which meets at The Bays. "Eight of us got together during our treatment and it was such a good experience I wanted to invite the world- but you can't do that at home," she laughed.
Fiona Sanford was recognised for her sporting achievements and community spirit.
A dedicated sportswoman Fiona has represented her school in gymnastics, cricket, football, athletics, swimming, diving and netball and opened the 2011 secondary schools sports conference in Melbourne.
She was one of just eight young Australians to take part in the Beijing Youth Forum and has coached local young people in gymnastics.
Esther Revens accepted the event of the year award on behalf of the Rosebud Australia Day Committee which organises the fun run.
Mayor Frank Martin said: "I'm proud to congratulate the 2012 winners on behalf of our shire for their selfless dedication and contribution to our local community."
