Medicare, Centrelink caught up in shonky phone calls

26 May, 2010 04:00 AM
MEDICARE and Centrelink are warning people to watch out for hoaxes involving dodgy callers pretending to be from the government agencies.

Spokesman Hans Jongen said: "Medicare has received reports from women about suspicious phone calls from a man claiming to work for Medicare.

"He's phoned several women that we're aware of, offering cash and holiday prizes as rewards for participating in a survey. He's then proceeded to ask these women intimate and inappropriate questions." There had also been reports of scammers posing as Centrelink staff in an attempt to gain personal details from customers.
