 Large award for dad

Large award for dad

08 Sep, 2010 01:00 AM
SOMETIMES it's the small things parents do that make their children feel special. For the Large children of Tyabb, it's the hot chocolate their dad makes.

Michael Large was last week named the Somerville YMCA Community Father of the Year after his son Aiden, 7, wrote a letter singing his praises.

"My dad is great because every day when he comes home he asks me how my day was. He teaches me stuff and makes me hot chocolate. I love my dad," his letter read.

Mr Large said: "I'm extremely proud just to be nominated by my son, let alone to be selected as father of the year."

Somerville YMCA manager Travis Sauer said the award was not about finding "the best dad". "It acknowledges that ordinary people can have an extraordinary impact on children's lives," he said.

Sunday marked the 100th anniversary of Father's Day, first celebrated in 1910 by a YMCA club in the United States. Mr Large spent the day doing the things he and his children enjoy together – a trip to the park, playing games and drinking hot chocolate.
