How we celebrated Australia Day

01 Feb, 2012 02:10 PM
From a fun run to floats and fireworks, crowds turned out in force across the Mornington Peninsula to attend a range of Australia Day activities.

Organisers said the annual street parade down Mornington’s Main Street attracted a record turnout of more than 30,000 enthusiastic onlookers. The Red Hill Riders won the parade’s best sporting entry award while the entertainment prize went to the Morris Minor Club. Frankston RSL Pipes and Drums Band matched off with the best musical item award while Relay for Life took the honours for the community item category. OzChild won best new entry.

About 5500 people flocked to the Balnarring picnic races, where police praised the well behaved attendees.

The day ended with an explosion of colour at fireworks displays in Mornington and Rye, sponsored by the Weekly.
