Hamish is on a mission

26 May, 2010 04:00 AM
CARA, 11, of Mornington enjoys a meet and greet with Hamish McPig at Mornington farmers market on Saturday.

Many readers will remember similar visits by fellow porker Edgar, the well-loved 'face' of the Edgar's Mission Farm Sanctuary in Kilmore. Sadly, Edgar passed over to the 'sty in the sky' recently after falling ill, just after notching up his seventh birthday.

But Hamish, fresh from receiving second prize in the RSPCA's Million Paws Walk, is doing his bit to fly the animal rights flag by making regular public appearances and delighting all those who line up to give him for a pat.

Edgar's Mission founder Pam Ahern is lobbying against Australian laws that allow pregnant sows to be confined in small metal stalls, barely bigger than the pig herself.

"Until legislation changes, it is up to consumers to act with conscience and not support cruel methods of farming animals. We do really represent the hope that these animals' lives can change for the better. I'm sure Hamish will oink to that," Ms Ahern said.

Edgar's Mission, home to more than 200 rescued farm animals, can be visited by appointment. Sandra Bull
