A POLICEMAN is going to great heights to raise money for breast cancer support – the peak of Mt Kilimanjaro in east Africa.
Constable Daniel Deason, 27, whose mother is a breast cancer survivor, is on a mission to raise money for the Breast Cancer Network Australia.
"There's just my mother, me and my brother so our lives got pretty messed up after her diagnosis six years ago," said Constable Deason, who grew up in Mornington and attended Padua College.
"We came out the other side all right. But BCNA, which helps newly diagnosed women and their families, gave us lots of support.
"I'm doing this to raise money for them and to raise a bit of awareness that men – brothers, husbands, sons – are affected as well and also need a support network as it's hard to see a loved one go through it. You feel a little bit helpless."
Constable Deason, who works at the Frankston police station, is already training for the arduous, high-altitude trek, which will take seven days.
Mt Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, is the tallest free-standing mountain in the world at 5892 metres (19,330 feet).
"During the day it will be shorts and T-shirt weather but it will be bitterly cold at night."
Constable Deason said the fund-raiser was worth the immense time and effort. "It's a win-win for everyone."
Constable Deason heads off to Tanzania on October 2.
