Challenge on road overpass

24 Feb, 2010 12:00 AM
BAXTER residents have joined the chorus of discontent about the proposed route and design of the Peninsula Link freeway.

Residents group Baxter Residents and Traders Progress Action Committee says it supports the freeway but doesn't want the proposed overpass.

At a recent meeting, residents claimed the overpass would cut the small community in half.

Freeway proponent, the Linking Melbourne Authority, says the potential to intrude on the water table will prevent it from building an underpass.

Hastings MP Neale Burgess described the proposed overpass as a "monstrosity", saying "it will stand as a permanent eyesore for generations to come".

"Peninsula Link at Baxter will effectively become the gateway to the magnificent Mornington Peninsula and as such should not be a towering, ugly eyesore which severely and negatively impacts on a beautiful small community and its residents," he said.

The LMA is holding an information session in Baxter Hall on March 18 from 6-9pm.
