Caravan park plan upsets residents

01 Jul, 2009 12:03 PM
A GROUP of residents in Mt Eliza is opposing a proposed caravan park development on Nepean Highway.

The application for a park at the corner of the highway and Tower Road was lodged with Mornington Peninsula Shire in late March.

It includes 101 caravan and camping sites, 15 holiday units, a caretaker's residence, two amenities blocks, a kiosk and games room, swimming pool and parking for 49 vehicles.

Mt Eliza Action Group has dropped leaflets in 1100 letterboxes in Mt Eliza urging residents to "stop this undesirable development; please write to council objecting to the proposal".

The group suggests grounds for objection include that it conflicts with neighbourhood character, would create traffic congestion in Tower Road, would be used by permanent residents and that it was too far from services and facilities in Mt Eliza and Mornington.

The 5.6-hectare site is in the green wedge zone and abutts residential areas on two sides.

Objectors have also questioned the "tone" of the planning application by Melbourne Planning Pty Ltd on behalf of landowners Mr and Mrs Brett M McEwing and Morningdale Vineyards Pty Ltd. It refers to a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearing in which the shire unsuccessfully defended its opposition to the expansion of a caravan park in Dromana.

"If the council has any regard for the tribunal's authority, it should approve [our] proposal without too much ado," the application states. "However, if the council wishes to test the patience of the tribunal by mounting an academic opposition to the proposal, then we suggest that you should refuse the permit forthwith and pass the buck back to the tribunal. It is pointless doing all the unnecessary song and dance."
