Balnarring firefighters into action

11 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
A BUSHFIRE that broke out in Balnarring last Monday week wiped out scrub and grass and injured animals.

Balnarring CFA volunteer Graeme Briggs said eight crews were called to the half-hectare wooded area on private property at 11.40am.

"There was elevated fuel from the tree bark and scrub," Mr Briggs said.

"It took about an hour to control but we had crews on site till 4.30pm. It was a total fire ban day, so we had to ensure it was completely blacked out.

''We were happy to be able to contain it in a small area without it spreading further to infrastructure.

"A local neighbour initiated their bushfire action plan. It is good to see people putting these plans in place."

CFA crews worked tirelessly to catch and rescue injured native wildlife.

Wildlife Rescue collected injured possums from the site.

Mr Briggs urged caution on high-risk days and advised people to view the CFA website at cfa.vic.gov.au for the latest fire information.
